Day 1

30 degrees and 99 percent humidity was a shock after 20 degrees in Amsterdam. Border control was quicker than expected (about 10 times quicker than in the US nowadays). No fingerprints or photos taken, no questions asked (I wonder why... :-).
Our driver was waiting for us with a sign. We were talled by the car
rental company that he speaks English. Well, he does for sure but not much. He did not even understand that we would like to change money before we go to the hotel. Later he admitted he studied English for 10 yrs, but they did not talk a lot in the classes. In writing he is OK. Anyways after a couple days of practice he is getting better...

On the first afternoon we planned to buy some necessary stuff for our trip, like sleeping bags, some more T-shirts, boxers, pants, etc. (We brought only 2-3 boxers for example, expecting that everything will be really cheap here.) Also we were looking for memory cards for the digital cameras. Well, after 3-4 hrs of shopping we found out that either you buy really junky stuff for pennies or you buy good stuff for European prices. We started worrying a bit... By the end of the day we managed to purchase some boxers and slippers, so finally we could throw away the trekking boots which were kind of inconvenient in 30 degrees...

So don't expect Thailand-like prices for quality clothes here (like 5-6USD for a Ralph Lauren shirt, 2-3USD for a quality T-shirt).

We stayed at Traffic Hotel, which was quite cheap (40 yuan/6USD per person in a triple room) and bath rooms are absolutely clean.

Ghosts in the parking garage under Chengu's main sqare - preatty heavy door for an underground parking utility :-)

Chengdu by night...
